Dear Wonderful, Artistic Y'all,

I don't ordinarily like to engage in "telling secrets," but today I will, because I want to share three artistic secrets with you. Don't tell anyone. Unless yous similar them. Or discover them useful, or fun, or entertaining. And so delight tell them to everyone you lot run across, scream it from your rooftop, and tattoo it to your brow. Okay?

Artistic Secret #1: Everyone Can Draw

Doing fine art every bit creative self-care for this many years has taught me so much about myself, my feelings, and life. One of the things it'due south taught me is that "art" is not as tightly defined as the general population seems to think it is. Well-nigh people say, "I can't draw." The clandestine is, I know they can. Of class not all of u.s.a. can draw similar DaVinci, but in my experience with students, nearly people tin draw a lot better than they think they can, especially when they open up upwardly their idea of what constitutes a drawing or a "good drawing."

[bctt tweet="Everyone can draw, you lot just don't know it notwithstanding. "]

Creative Secret #two: Cartoon Can Be Calming

When you are non-judgmental and open up up your definition of what a "proficient drawing" is, drawing can be a very calming activeness, especially for those of u.s. who get a bit high strung or anxious. (Ahem. Who? Me? )

So how nearly it? Would you be willing to try some very simple fine art exercises and see whether or not they have a positive bear on on your mood? As long equally you tin hold a pen, you can do it right.

[bctt tweet="Every bit long as y'all can hold a pen, you can draw."]

Artistic Secret #iii: Your Inner Critic is Just Scared

If y'all recall your inner critic might get in the way of you approaching this with an open up heed, you lot might want to first exercise the inner critic exercise from the Starting Your Art Periodical e-book. Sometimes nosotros all need some aid getting our fears to step aside before we bravely endeavour something new. Now let's do some fine art exercises for relaxation!

Simple Drawing Techniques for Anxiety

Drawing Supplies

You lot tin draw with whatever you lot've got at habitation – a pen or pencil and computer paper piece of work just fine. If you are looking to become some of the aforementioned furnishings equally I do in the pages below, or getting some new supplies volition help you feel more inspired, you can find the Micron pen I use hither, and the small Moleskine periodical here.

Drawing Exercise: Drawing Lines

Art Journal Lines

I find this practice really helpful when I desire to draw but experience bromidic, unfocused, or overwhelmed. I like to watch the lines appear beyond the page. I give myself permission to draw equally fast or slow as feels good in the moment. Commonly if I showtime out drawing fast and sloppy, after a few minutes I'll find my lines getting neater and closer together, my breathing slows downwards, and I can recollect straight again. I particularly like this one when I feel really broken-hearted. It's grounding for me. Does this work for y'all?

While it seems silly, I really like the look of these pages in my journals. Sometimes I'll leave them every bit is, and at others, I will use them as a groundwork for writing, painting, or collage.

Drawing Exercise: Cartoon Circles

Circles Drawing1

This is one of my new favorite cartoon techniques. I've been playing with it in my journals and in my paintings on canvass. I draw tiny lilliputian circles and barely make whatever decisions about where they are going. Instead, I but notice as they announced and migrate across the page.

My mitt seems to option up a rhythm and I follow forth. Making the jagged lines in between which the circles exist suggests all sorts of natural things to me – maps, microscopic photography, or growth on the underside of a foliage. What do yous see?

Cartoon Practise: Blind Contour Drawing

blind contour drawing, blind contour tutorial

Recently I found a wonderful artist, Koosje Keone, who shares her beautiful journals and drawing techniques. Please bank check her out. She'southward inspired me to get back into my blind profile drawings lately.

Blind contour cartoon involves looking only at your subject, not your paper, and keeping one continuous line on the page. The results are distorted and even so precise, emotional, and very beautiful. I love how it brings me very forcefully into the nowadays moment as I slowly move my pen across the edge of my bailiwick.

Creatively Yours,

Amy
